Various Kinds Of Metal Cremation Urns

By Sally Delacruz

Buyers have a lot of flexibility when buying funeral vases because there are currently many types. They are manufactured from a broad range of substances including hardwood, plastic, marble, ceramic, bronze, and metals such as stainless steel, aluminium, silver, and copper. Metal cremation urns have a variety of properties in terms of shape, color, size, and use. This article is about a description of some of most basic types one can get on the market.

Companion urn is the first type under this discussion. Companion urns hold cremains of two individuals. As such, they are very large in size. They are used in situations where the cremated remains of 2 individuals have to be stored or disposed off together. Such circumstances include a mother and a child who passed away during birth, dead couples, and still-born twins. The standard size of these types ranges between 300 cubic inches and 400 inches cubed.

Individual size urn is smaller when compared to its companion counterpart. It can accommodate the cremains of one person alone. The industrial standard size is two hundred cubic inches although they can be as small as 110 or as big as 250 cubic inches. Another variation of these two types is the sharing cremation urn. This type is needed when the cremated remains of an individual need to be shared among several family members.

Sharing urns are considerably smaller because they hold small quantities of ash. Extra large brands accommodate more than 100 cubic inches of ash while small models take up about 30 inches cubed only. Other common use for them is holding ashes from infants. Though rare, they may be used to hold ash of mature individuals. They are viewed as individual urns in such situations.

A variation of sharing urn is the keepsake model. Keepsake vases are also meant to hold a small portion of the ashes and they are much smaller. They are used together with other types of vases including individual and companion. They get used for keeping a portion of the ashes close to the home or for carrying the ashes out for being scattered. This happens when the rest of the ashes are taken to their final place of rest.

There are several other types of urns in use including sports, military, decorative, and pet vases. Those meant for pets have varied capacities because they hold animal ashes of very diverse amounts. Decorative vases on the other hand are even tinier because they primarily are used as decorative items rather than as vases. They only incorporate a small interior chamber for holding ashes.

All the items described above have bases, handles, and possibly leads. Each comes with two handles placed on the sides. Toppling is prevented by the base which is also normally heavier. The contents of the vase are kept intact by leads.

Lack of knowledge regarding vases can make it very difficult for a buyer to choose the right size. It can be a very disappointing situation for the ashes not to fit in the item purchased especially if it is burial for a human being. This is because the process must be put to a stand-still for some time. It is advisable to acquire a cubic inch per pound of weight.
