If You Want A Celebration To Remember, Have A San Francisco City Hall Wedding

By Andrew Snyder

You and your partner have a lot of decisions to make when you start planning your nuptials. You may be looking at something simple and economical or an all out bash with no expense spared. It might be fun to tell your guests you are going to the courthouse to have a San Francisco city hall wedding. They will be in for a shock if they thought you meant a quick service in a sterile office conducted by a local judge.

This building is one of the most iconic and photographed monuments in San Francisco. You can actually be married there for as little as a thousand dollars. This amount will get you a one hour ceremony conducted on the fourth floor gallery or on the Mayor's Balcony. There is seating for sixty guests. Since you only have one hour, the reception will have to be held elsewhere.

Couples who have more to spend and are looking for something a little more elaborate can choose a two hour ceremony. This services are conducted on the Grand Staircase of the Rotunda. The area can accommodate up to two hundred guests. For five thousand dollars you get the venue, chairs, insurance, and basic services. The two hour window is inclusive of setting up and breaking down.

Evening ceremonies in this impressive, nineteenth century building are especially popular. You will repeat your vows on the Grand Staircase, enjoy cocktails in the North Light Court, and then move into the Rotunda area for a formal dinner with dancing afterward. You can choose to be married during the week or on the weekend. You will have access to the venue from two in the afternoon until two the following morning.

When you purchase one of these packages, you need to be aware of what is, and what is not, included. The events coordinator will meet with you to discuss exactly what you have in mind. The building staff are limited in what number of chairs and other equipment they can offer couples. Contracting with an outside vendor is usually the best idea.

None of the packages include a marriage license or certificate. You have to get these through the Clerk of the Court. The packages do not provide someone to officiate the service. Unless you have someone in mind, you can contact the city or the Clerk of Court for more information.

There are a number of rules and regulations you will have to adhere to if you are planning a ceremony in this building. Smoking is not allowed, and you can't have helium balloons. No fireworks, confetti, smoke or snow machines are allowed. No signs, banners, or lights can be affixed to the outside of the building without the supervision of the city engineer.

San Francisco is a beautiful place, and city hall is one of its most beautiful buildings. It is considered an excellent example of American Renaissance architecture. Getting married there will be an experience you can relate to generations to come.
