Lessons From Hugging A Porcupine

By Evan Sanders

So, I hate to break it to you...I've never truly hugged a porcupine.

But in this metaphor, I have.

So bear with me for a second.

Relationships are incredibly complicated.

Friendships, romantic relationships, developing relationships...and pretty much any type of relationship between two people out there in this world. People are messy, life gets incredibly messy, and the fact that we can get along with all of the crazy things going on in our world is an absolute miracle.

When you throw in thoughts and emotions life starts to get even more complicated.

But there's something to be said for being there for other people despite the complexities of life. There's something to be said for the person who can be another persons rock even when their entire world is falling apart.

We can't do this thing called life all by ourselves. We have to have people there to support us when we are down and when we really need a helping hand.

But it takes vulnerability.

It takes you being willing to break down your walls and really confiding in another person. It takes trust. It takes you being willing to put your faith in another person being able to take care of you.

So what's the beautiful part about all of this?

You give someone the opportunity to love you just the way you are and just the way you aren't.

You become imperfectly perfect to them and they love you to death for knowing all of those flaws you've so desperately tried to hide from the world.

We are all deep down thirsting for someone to love us in this crazy world.

People can be pretty prickly at times...like a porcupine...especially when their lives get really hard.

Hug them.

No matter what is going on in a persons life, let them know that they are loved and that they have support.

That's the good stuff. That's real love.

That's really loving someone for who they are.

That's how we all deserve to be loved.

That' what we deserve.
