How To Design Custom Engagement Jewelry In NYC

By Letitia Connell

There are many ways to tell someone just how much you love them, and arguably the biggest one is to marry them. Most traditional marriages include some kind of engagement ring, and eventually a wedding band on the day of the ceremony. You could buy a mass market set of bands, or design your own. Making your own custom engagement rings in NYC lets you get a unique set that you will always be able to treasure.

There are two ways to go about this endeavor. You can design your own ring and have someone make it for you. Any good custom jeweler can take your rough sketch, and, after asking a few questions, make the ring that you desire. You can even collaborate, allowing them to use your ideas as a jumping off point to make something similar yet better.

If you are a very hands-on or crafty person, you can arrange to make the ring yourself. Some places offer a series of classes to learn how to make jewelry, including rings and bands. This may take weeks or months to accomplish, so if that is not an option for you, there is of course the option of letting a jeweler make the piece based on your design.

After you have the idea for the look and shape of the ring, there are several decision you have to make about the size and materials you are going to use. The first has to do with the band, which is quite important. Ask yourself what color band the recipient would want. Do they wear a lot of gold or white gold jewelry, or perhaps they prefer sterling silver for a more classic look. You could even go for something a little more exotic, like rose gold or platinum.

Next of course are the stones. Diamonds are a big draw, and the vast majority of engagement jewelry are made with them. However, that doesn't mean you have to limit yourself to that. There are other precious and semi-precious stones that look fantastic and very sparkly on a band. Consider rubies, emeralds or diamonds that aren't white such as canary or black diamonds. Think of what the recipient loves and go from there.

Then there is the size of the band, along with the thickness. Traditionally, and engagement ring is paired with a wedding band that matches it. If you go too thick, the actual wedding band may not fit properly, so keep this in mind when choosing.

Keep the wedding ring in mind when drawing up plans for the engagement one. Also keep in mind that the groom's ring usually matches, so think about the size and thickness of that band as well, and whether you want to embellish it with stones or not.

Finally, you can have any one of these rings inscribed to make it extra special. Usually this is done on the inside of the band, so only the two of you know it's there. Initials, a special message or a simple I Love You are all things you can get inscribed.
