Studying the case and finding leads are some steps in uncovering evidence against the suspect. First component is case review and analysis. This is pretty understandable as the investigators will review the case for important facts and analyze it to further the investigation. Forensic investigation is helpful here as it gives scientific based explanation on the evidence. These are done at laboratories wherein results are presented at court.

Secondly, they do defendant interviews. Certain questions will be asked to the victim in order to find the angle of the crime against them. In effect, they can form a general motive idea on the suspect and the whole event. This is important in order to understand fully the case.

The third component is inspecting the scene of the crime. They are going to analyze what happened there. They are to look for left behind objects, fingerprints, and tools used at that time. Fourth component here is investigating the background of their suspect. This includes searching for criminal history on his records. Their close friends and family, as well as the ones they interact with daily, are going to be interviewed as to their behavior and character.

Fifthly, they are to interview the witness. They will search and then talk to their witness as to their memory of this crime that day. They then document this so they have witness statements on file. Sixthly, they do reports on the investigation and testifying. They will make a case report on their analysis, conclusion, and findings about this. They will them submit the file to the defense lawyers, court, and police chief.
