Modern Divorce Records Illinois

By Ben Kingsley

Like marriage records, divorce records are considered public and can be accessed by anyone who wants the records for any purpose. However, in Illinois, divorce records are made available only to immediate family members as well as to the persons indicated in the divorce records.

The Department of Public Health of Illinois records dates to as far back as 1962. Although the Department has these records at hand, they are not authorized to issue certified copies of the dissolution of marriage record. What they can provide the individual requesting for the information is to verify the details concerning the dissolution of the marriage only. The Vital Records Division can verify facts starting from 1962 onwards and charges a minimal fee of $5 for every request. Verifications are done through mail, fax or in person. The following is a guide on how to send the information needed.

For mail requests, download the application for verification of dissolution of marriage record form. The file is in PDF format so one has to make sure that they have a PDF viewer to view the form. All the fields should be completed, as the Division will not process incomplete forms. Once the form is completed, mail the form together with a cheque or a money order amounting to $5. Make sure that the check is made payable to the Illinois Department of Public Health. Processing would take about a month's time.

For fax verification, the person making the request can fax the application form or provide the details mentioned in the cover sheet of the request form. The person should also include their credit card number and expiration date for payment of fees. Fees to pay include the $5 verification fee, $19.50 for UPS and $10 for credit card handling charge. One should also include their contact details, signature and a copy of a non-expired government-issued ID. Please note that the department will not process incomplete application forms. Processing takes about a week's time. Delivery requires signature of an adult and PO Box addresses are not allowed.

For in person requests, they can drop the form at the Vital Records office during business hours. The processing time takes about 3-4 days. For pick up, the person who requested the information should show a valid ID.

Certified divorce records are available from the county court clerk where the dissolution of marriage was obtained. To find information on how to request for your records, phone the county where the dissolution was granted. The Public Information Office of the county processes varieties of information for the public and as such, processing time might take a few days to a week's time.

Another way to obtain records of divorce is through online means. One can check out online divorce companies that offer the service free although you have to pay certain fees if you want to access the complete information. By far, online application is the fastest and most convenient way of gathering government records. If you only require the files for information purposes only, going through the online process is much easier and saves you time. If you are looking for certified true copies, visiting the County Clerk Office for the copies is advised.
