Kentucky Marriage And Divorce Records

By Ben Kingsley

Kentucky marriage records are one of the most requested documents in the state. It has been made open to the public since the Freedom of Information act has been in place. This allows the residents of the state access to their personal documents.

Genealogy is one of the main reasons why the residents of Kentucky request for a copy of the said file. It contains information that is necessary when updating the family history. Without it, the family records may not be accurate and can be considered erroneous. The government would also call for a copy of a marriage certificate especially when the requests involve the couple. It is used to validate the status and the identity of the involved individuals. Those who are conducting a background check would also refer to this document. Employers and dating individuals are the people who do a background check to verify the status of their employees and partners.

Just like any other marriage certificate, a Kentucky marriage certificate would contain details about the marriage of a couple. This includes the complete names of the husband and the wife as well as when and where they got married. Additional information that can be found on the document includes the names of the parents and the people who were witnesses to the event.

In order to obtain a copy of a marriage certificate, it is important that one knows the guidelines in obtaining it. Access to the document is limited only to the people whose names are found on the file. Immediate families of the bride and the groom are also given special access to the document. However, those who are not related to the couple would have to secure a special request in order to gain access to the file. A processing fee of $6 is needed in order to have the request granted. An application form has to be filled out with necessary information such as the names of the couple as well as the date and the place where the marriage was registered. It is also important that the requesting individual indicate their personal details on the application form. All of the information provided can help simplify the retrieval process.

Marriages which took place since June 1958 are the only files available in the state office. Files before that date can only be obtained at the county office where it was originally registered. Some recent files may not be available in the state office; it can then be requested at the county of occurrence. Processing fee would not be the same for all counties. One can also request for the document through a mail order but the document can be obtained after several days.

Online retrieval for the records of marriage in the state of Kentucky is now available. This method is convenient and fast since there is no need to travel because the search can be done even at home. Results of the online search are also obtained in just seconds. There are even websites that offer a free search while others would do it for a reasonable fee.
